Frequently asked questions

Which video formats can I import?

FrameGrab reads the formats iOS itself can decode, including MP4, MOV, M4V and HEVC — the formats produced by iPhone, iPad, most cameras and most video apps. Files up to 2 GB are supported.

If a video will not load, it is usually a container or codec iOS cannot decode (some MKV or AVI files, for example). Converting it to MP4 or MOV on a computer and importing again will normally fix it.

How do I import a video?

Three ways, all from the home screen:

How do I capture a frame at an exact moment?

Open Advanced on the extraction screen and use the Timecode field to type an exact position in hh:mm:ss.SSS format. The two arrows next to it step one frame backward or forward — press and hold them to fine-tune continuously.

Why is batch extraction limited to 100 frames per run?

Full-resolution frames are large, and every frame is decoded and written to disk. The 100-frame limit keeps a single run predictable in time, memory and storage, and prevents very long or high-resolution videos from overwhelming the device.

Need more? Run the batch again over the next section of the video — for example extract 0:00–0:20, then 0:20–0:40. Frames already extracted are kept in the gallery.

Can I extract frames by frame rate instead of by interval?

Yes. In Advanced, switch the method from By interval to By frame rate and enter the target fps. This is useful when you want a fixed number of frames per second regardless of the spacing you would otherwise pick by hand.

I cannot save frames to Photos.

Saving requires photo-library permission. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos → FrameGrab (or Settings → FrameGrab → Photos) and choose Add Photos Only or Full Access, then try again.

If a batch partially fails, the app retries automatically. Frames that still fail can be saved again from the gallery.

Where are my frames stored, and does the app fill up my storage?

Extracted frames and imported video copies stay in the app until you delete them — nothing is removed automatically, so you can always come back and extract more frames from a video you imported earlier.

To check or clear space: open Settings → Storage. It shows how much space frames and temporary files use, and Clear all extracted frames removes everything in one step. Images already saved to Photos are never touched.

How do I delete a frame or a whole selection?

In the gallery, swipe left on a thumbnail to delete that frame. For several at once, tap Select, choose the frames (or Select all), then tap Delete. Deletions inside the app do not affect anything you have already saved to Photos.

What is the History screen for?

Imported videos are listed there so you can return later and extract more frames without importing again. Removing an entry deletes the app's local copy of that video to free space — the frames you already extracted are kept.

FrameGrab does not appear when I share a video from another app.

Only video files can be shared into FrameGrab, so the app appears in the share sheet for videos rather than for text, links or documents. If a particular app shares video in an unusual way, use Choose from Photos or Choose from Files instead — the result is identical.

Do my videos get uploaded anywhere?

No. Decoding, frame extraction and saving all happen on your device. FrameGrab has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising SDKs and no servers, and it works in airplane mode. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Which languages and appearance options are available?

The interface is available in 11 languages — English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Italian — and follows your system language by default. Light and dark appearance can follow the system or be set manually in Settings.

Does FrameGrab edit or convert video?

No. FrameGrab exports still images only. It does not trim, record, re-encode or convert video files.
